Strong global overnight stays outlook to generate mixed reactions in 2024
Global overnight stays are forecast to rise 16% above 2019 levels in 2024, driven by an increase of 19% in domestic nights across the same period. The early revival of domestic travel during the pandemic was led by international travel restrictions, but demand is now supported by more value-focused tourists, and it remains a popular choice for many travellers.
What you will learn:
- International travel is once again a key source of tourism activity with global arrivals set to reach 1.5bn this year, surpassing 2019 volumes, but will present challenges for some destinations that are struggling to accommodate the rising demand.
- Tourism intensity, measured by total nights per capita, highlights the strain on island destinations like Greece, Malta, Aruba and the Maldives. But competitive and attractive cities or resorts may also face disproportionate challenges because certain areas are visited significantly more than others. For both instances, limited space, popular natural attractions and, for some, a large cruise ship presence adds to the pressure. Pressure is further intensified by extreme weather conditions, impacting the environment, natural resources and economy.
