Mapping China’s tariff pain to relative gains for other emerging economies.

with Louise Loo and Gabriel Sterne | Online | May 19, 2025

Trade wars are costly for everyone, but there are clear relative losers and winners. Tariffs will cripple US-China trade, and we expect China's goods trade surplus to shrink but only to a still substantial 3.2% of GDP this year and remain significant in the medium term owing to trade diversification, shifts up the export value chain, and the reduced import intensity of Chinese demand. Ironically, other than China, the relative winners list includes the very countries Trump targeted most heavily in his April 2 tariff regime: Vietnam, Cambodia, Malaysia, Pakistan, and the Philippines

LatAm será resiliente ante la desaceleración del comercio global

with Debora Reyna Garcia and Mauricio Monge | Online | May 9, 2025

LatAm got it easy in Trump’s tariffs, but pressure on Mexico continues

with Joan Domene and Tim Hunter | Online | April 29, 2025

We will examine what US tariffs mean for the region. Most Latin American countries face lower direct trade disruptions than Asian and European competitors from President Trump’s reciprocal tariffs. Lower dependence on US trade and tariff exclusions will limit direct impacts, but second round effects, lower commodity prices and China’s response will shape the fallout for the region. Mexico’s especially conciliatory stance has not yet yielded substantial concessions and downside risks to our outlook grow as Trump doubles down on attacks to its closest trade partner.

25% auto tariffs especially painful in Japan and South Korea

with Makoto Tsuchiya and Toby Whittington | Online | April 25, 2025

US tariffs of 25% on all automobile and auto parts will weigh heavily on the Japanese and South Korean automotive sectors. The US is the biggest automotive export destination for Japan and South Korea, with exports to the country accounting for over a fifth of sales in South Korea and 7% in Japan. Additionally, tariffs will hit shipments via third countries such as Mexico, consequently hitting domestic auto parts production. In this webinar, we will discuss how much auto production will be hit in Japan and South Korea and through which channels.
