Milano-Cortina Winter Olympics: Wider Footprint, Wider Wins

A unique Olympic Games model unlocks broader tourism impacts across Northern Italy.

The Milano–Cortina Winter Olympics 2026 is set to redefine the tourism impact of a Winter Olympic Games. Organizers designed the event around a higher-capacity, multi-destination hosting model—one that can spread visitors across regions, sustain travel gains longer, and avoid the sharp congestion seen at past Olympics, including the 2006 Turin Games.

The Games will also lift travel demand beyond the event itself. Italy will welcome an estimated 66.7 million international arrivals in 2026—up 9.3% year over year—while Milan will outpace the national trend with arrivals rising 10.7%. Nights spent in Northern Italy will outpace the national trend and while Milan acts as the main gateway for the games, other cities such as Venice and Verona will also benefit. We expect some ski trips and non‑Olympic drivers (Jubilee year effect, Dolomites/nature appeal) to also lift demand.

Domestic travel will hold up better than usual during a mega-event with nights spent in Italy to rise 5.0% on last year, reaching 229mn in 2026, as the dispersed venue model and improved rail access help limit congestion.

With demand extending well beyond the event period and benefits spreading across Northern Italy, the Games provide an early test case for how mega-events can drive growth, resilience, and long-term destination appeal.
