The Economic Impact of Environmental Horticulture and Landscaping in the UK
Commissioned by Environmental Horticultural Group (EHG)

This study, commissioned by the Environmental Horticultural Group (EHG), highlights the contributions of the environmental horticulture and landscaping industry to the UK economy in 2023. The industry includes companies cultivating ornamental plants, garden equipment manufacturers, wholesalers and retailers like garden centres, and landscape and arboriculture specialists maintaining home gardens and parks. Beyond these activities, environmental horticulture also boosts tourism by attracting visitors to the UK’s renowned parks and gardens.
This study quantifies the industry’s substantial direct impact from companies operating in the industry, as well as the indirect impact stimulated through its supply chain spending, and the induced impact from wage-financed consumption by employees working in the industry and in its supply chain workers. Additionally, the study explores the wider social and environmental benefits of the horticulture industry, including health, wellbeing, social inclusion, and ecosystem services, based on a rapid literature review.
